Avalanche and rockfall monitoring with distributed acoustic sensing.

Cautus Geo’s fiber DAS solutions provide a comprehensive avalanche information solution, encompassing early avalanche warnings, avalanche verification on roads, traffic updates, and assessments of damage incurred by road users during avalanche events.

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) using fiber technology analyses vibrations along a fiber cable. This cable can be an existing infrastructure or a dedicated one for avalanche and traffic analysis.
An interrogator connected to the fiber cable analyzes the signals, providing information on surrounding vibrations. This analysis offers precise event location data along the fiber cable.

NORSAR is an internationally recognized independent research foundation specializing in seismology and seismic monitoring. Through the integration of NORSAR technology, Cautus Geo offers a comprehensive solution, including early avalanche warnings, avalanche verification on roads, traffic information, and damage assessment for road users during avalanche events.

The significant advantage of our fiber DAS solution is its ability to monitor up to 170 km of road or railway using a single fiber cable and interrogator. This enables monitoring of multiple avalanche paths and events. Since the cable is buried underground, the system remains unaffected by challenging weather conditions.

The fiber DAS system processes and analyzes data locally, triggering alarms and connecting to local traffic warning systems. Avalanche and traffic activity information is also accessible through Cautus Web
